David Nagib is the Miller Professor of Organic Chemistry at The Ohio State University's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Boston College (2006) and a Ph.D. from Princeton University (2011) under David MacMillan. As an NIH Postdoctoral Scholar at UC Berkeley with F. Dean Toste and Omar Yaghi, he explored gold-catalyzed C-H activation and MOF catalysts. Joining Ohio State in 2014, he became an Associate Professor with tenure in 2020. His research focuses on radical-mediated organic synthesis, including C-H and C-O functionalization, catalyst design, and applications in medicines, materials, and biofuels. His work bridges practical and theoretical challenges in organic chemistry, emphasizing novel dual-catalytic strategies and mechanism-driven innovation.
Key research themes include: harnessing mild radical generation for complex synthesis, developing catalysts for selective C-H activation, and creating captodative catalysts for C-O displacement. His lab's innovations have been recognized by awards from the ACS, NIH, NSF, Lilly, and Sloan Foundation. Collaborations span interdisciplinary areas, with an emphasis on translating fundamental chemistry into scalable methodologies.
Publications highlight breakthroughs like enantioselective radical C-H amination, imidate radical cascades, and ketyl radical reactivity. His team actively engages graduate and undergraduate students in exploring new catalytic frontiers. The Nagib Laboratory maintains a dynamic presence in organic chemistry, with ongoing projects in radical polarity, iron carbenes, and deoxygenative cross-metathesis.
