David Marvuglio serves as a Lecturer in the Bass Department within the Professional Performance school at Berklee College of Music, teaching performance techniques across five courses while integrating diverse musical traditions.
His research focuses on the intersections of Jazz, Metal Music, Bass Performance, Classical Music, and Music Theory, emphasizing how metal draws from jazz and classical foundations (e.g., Stravinsky, Paganini, Bach). He advocates for developing personal instrumental voice through eclectic imitation rather than pure replication, citing his own synthesis of upright bass, rock intensity, and jazz improvisation.
As a performer, Marvuglio collaborates with bands including Emily Peal and the Band of Skinny Men and Cope, sharing stages with Ice Nine Kills, the Smyrk, Gary Karr, and Bill Pierce. His international festival appearances span the Umbria Jazz Festival (Italy), Seminario de Jazz Festival (Mexico), and Panama Jazz Festival. Discography highlights include Tunneling and Fine Fur Coat (Emily Peal), The End of Jason Todd (the Smyrk), and Ripper (Holiday Electric).
He holds the Uchida Fellowship from Berklee College of Music and studied under bass luminaries Paul Jackson, Gary Karr, Lincoln Goines, and Matthew Garrison.
