Mark McCormick is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Music at Connecticut College specializing in Jazz Double Bass. He joined the institution in 2004 and serves as Assistant Director of the Thames Valley Youth Orchestra located at Connecticut College.
McCormick earned both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Manhattan School of Music as a scholarship student of Linda McKnight. He further studied with renowned double bass soloist Gary Karr and had special studies with Edwin Barker at Boston University.
His professional performance career includes:
- Member of the United States Coast Guard Band since 1996
- Performed for three U.S. presidents and numerous foreign heads of state
- Appearances with Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Prism Chamber Orchestra, and Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra
- Soloist at the Texas International Double Bass Symposium
- Performances at prestigious jazz festivals in Sacramento CA, Washington D.C., and Sun Valley ID
- Recordings for Koch, Newport Classic, Bridge, and Vox labels
McCormick's research interests focus on:
- Jazz Double Bass Performance techniques
- Classical Double Bass repertoire
- Chamber music collaboration
- Cross-genre musical performance
As part of Connecticut College's all-Steinway campus with exceptional recording facilities including the Cummings Electronic and Digital Sound Studio and Elizabeth Gilbert Fortune Recording Studio, McCormick contributes to a vibrant music program that offers majors in Music Studies and Music, Sound, and Technology.
