David Clark serves as a Professor in the Bass department at Berklee College of Music, teaching upright/electric bass and jazz. He directs the Berklee Faculty Inter-Galactic Sun Ra Astro-Infinity Myth Equation Commemorative Arkestra and previously held the resident jazz instructor position at Cincinnati's International School for the Double Bass.
Clark earned bachelor's and master's degrees in composition from the New England Conservatory of Music.
His research focuses on jazz performance pedagogy, emphasizing rhythm section cohesion as "the shaman's drum" and transformative groove development. He advocates for panoramic musical awareness, structured practice routines that convert frustration into creative exploration, and balancing technical skill with ensemble identity. His compositional work spans jazz writing and production, recorded by artists including Gary Burton and Cercie Miller.

As a performer, Clark has collaborated with Mose Allison, Terri Lyne Carrington, John Medeski, and the Boston Pops across 40+ albums. His teaching philosophy centers on helping students transcend individual practice to embody collective musical identity, with particular focus on avoiding overly busy playing in favor of foundational rhythmic robustness.
