His research and professional interests center on guitar performance, jazz and contemporary improvisation, rhythm and groove, and music pedagogy. He emphasizes technical mastery, musical expression, and versatility in his teaching, drawing from decades of experience as a session musician and bandleader. He mentors students in overcoming technical limitations and developing strong musical identities.
Bartlett has taught groove ensembles internationally in Italy, Argentina, and Los Angeles, and offers private instruction grounded in personal experience rather than formal pedagogical lineage. He has authored or instructed several online courses through Berklee Online, including Guitar Chords 101 and a series of private guitar lessons, reflecting his commitment to accessible music education.
His performance career began at age 19 as a session guitarist in New York City, working with producer Arthur Baker and contributing to R&B recordings. He has performed at major festivals such as the Montreal Jazz Festival, Boston Globe Jazz Festival, and Indonesia Jazz Festival. He has shared the stage with legends like Chick Corea, opened for Weather Report and Hiram Bullock, and collaborated with Prince’s drummer John Blackwell on a live DVD for Hudson Music. His band, the Bruce Bartlett Trio, has released multiple albums including Nasty Habits, Free for a Price, and Instant Gratification. He is currently working on his eighth solo record and continues to compose and perform original music.
Bartlett studied privately with notable guitarists such as John Scofield, Mike Stern, Mick Goodrick, and Gary Chaffee, as well as with Charlie Banacos, a legendary jazz educator. His teaching philosophy emphasizes listening to the student's needs, balancing technical training with emotional expression, and respecting musical traditions while encouraging innovation.
