David Marshall is a Professor of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour at the Edinburgh Business School, with affiliations to the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems. His research focuses on consumer behavior, family dynamics, and food security, combining marketing theory with sociocultural analyses of food practices.
- Education: BSc in Agricultural and Food Marketing (Newcastle University, 1982); PhD in Marketing (Newcastle University, 1991)
Research Interests include food choice behavior, visual discourse in family meals, and the role of media in shaping consumption practices. Recent work examines the informal food economy in rural Scotland and influencer marketing’s impact on consumer self-disclosure.
Research Outputs (selected) span food security, family meal practices, historical marketing analysis, and gendered advertising discourses. His projects often employ qualitative and visual methodologies, including selfie analysis and cross-cultural comparisons.
Leadership Roles: Head of the Marketing Group, Director of Postgraduate Programmes (2011-2014), and member of the Executive Committee. He actively collaborates with external research organizations and contributes to public policy discussions.
