David Haycock is a Senior Lecturer in Sport, Physical Activity and Health at Edge Hill University's Department of Sport and Physical Activity, affiliated with the School of Education, Mental Health & Wellbeing and the Faculty Office Health Research Institute. He earned a BSc in Sport & Exercise Sciences, an MSc in Sociology of Sport, and a PhD from the University of Chester (2015). His research examines sociological links between sport, leisure, physical activity, and health, with a focus on policy implications for education and sport. He teaches on undergraduate programs like Sport Management and Sports Coaching, and leads postgraduate modules in the MSc Sport, Physical Activity and Mental Health program.
Research interests include youth sport development, adult sport participation trends, and the role of sport in health policy. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and health. Notable research groups include the Movement Behaviours, Health & Wellbeing Research Group and the Politics, Pedagogy and Practice Research Group. Recent publications highlight community sport-policy integration, mental health interventions in sports, and sociological analyses of athlete backgrounds.
David supervises MSc and PhD projects, reflecting his commitment to fostering academic research. His editorial work includes roles with the International Journal of Sport Policy and Politics (2010–2014). His research often addresses inequalities in sport participation, life transitions, and the sociocultural factors shaping leisure and sport careers.
