David Fox is the Chair of Common Law at the University of Edinburgh's School of Law, part of the Edinburgh Centre for Private Law. He holds a B.A., LL.B. from the University of Otago (New Zealand) and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. Previously, he was a Fellow at St John’s College, Cambridge, and held visiting posts at the National University of Singapore. As a Barrister in England and Wales, he contributes to legal practice through Maitland Chambers.
His research focuses on monetary law, trust law, and legal history, with recent work exploring cryptocurrency's intersection with common law property doctrines. Notable projects include analyses of the 1707 Anglo-Scots monetary union and historical case studies like Mixt Monies. He supervises PhD students in monetary law and trust law with historical emphases.
Publications include Property Rights in Money (2008) and co-edited volumes such as Money in the Western Legal Tradition (2016). His articles address topics from medieval monetary systems to modern financial instruments, emphasizing legal-historical perspectives.
