Ashley Hannay is a Lecturer in Property Law at the University of Manchester's Law Department. She joined in September 2021 after teaching at the University of Cambridge and Queen Mary, University of London. Her expertise spans legal history, equity, trusts, and land law, with a focus on English property law development up to the mid-16th century and the legal history of Northern England.
Education: BA (First Class) from Lancaster University, Dip. Law, LLM (Distinction) from Edinburgh, PhD from Cambridge, and a practicing barrister at Middle Temple.
Research interests include doctrinal and historical property law, equity principles, and medieval legal practices. Notable awards include the Sir Anthony Hart Doctoral Paper Prize (2022) and the Milsom Studentship (2017).
Teaching includes Land Law, Equity and Trusts, and Advanced Property and Trusts. She co-chairs the Manchester Private Law Hub and the Northern Legal History Group, and is active in professional bodies like the Selden Society and Chethem Society.
