Dr. David Cox is a Lecturer at the University of Southampton specializing in the cultural and intellectual history of 19th-century United States, particularly the racial politics of African American culture. He co-convenes the North American History Seminar at the Institute of Historical Research. His research focuses on representations of African American culture from emancipation to the Great Migration, and the intersection of race with modernity and magic in the Atlantic world.
