Dr. Laura Gillespie is a Lecturer in Modern American History at Liverpool John Moores University, specializing in nineteenth and twentieth-century U.S. history, African American politics, and Indigenous governance. She earned her PhD, MA, and BA in History from Queen's University Belfast.
- PhD in History (2017-2022), Queen's University Belfast
- MA in History (2014-2015), Queen's University Belfast
- BA Joint Honours in History and English (2011-2014), Queen's University Belfast
Her research focuses on grassroots organizing in Black refugee camps during the Civil War and the enduring political leadership of Haudenosaunee Clan Mothers. The former project argues that formerly enslaved people's activism reshaped U.S. political landscapes post-Emancipation, while the latter examines Indigenous female governance and diplomacy across centuries.
Gillespie's recent publications explore the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 and transnational narratives of runaway slaves to Mexico. These works highlight intersections of race, citizenship, and cross-border resistance in American history.
- Associate Fellow, Higher Education Academy (2021)
She is actively involved in academic communities as a member of the Southern Historical Association and the Irish Association for American Studies, contributing to teaching excellence and historical scholarship.
