Christer Petley is a Professor of Atlantic History at the University of Southampton, specializing in British imperial history and Caribbean studies. His research focuses on the histories and legacies of slavery and abolition, particularly the political struggles leading to the dismantling of the British slave system. He is affiliated with the Southampton Centre for Nineteenth-Century Research, Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, and the Centre for Imperial and Postcolonial Studies.
His current research examines the impacts of war, revolution, and slave resistance on British debates about abolition and emancipation between the 1780s and 1830s. He teaches undergraduate modules on racism and resistance, the British Atlantic world, and slave emancipation, and contributes to MA modules on eighteenth-century and imperial history. He welcomes PhD applications on Atlantic History, Caribbean studies, and related themes.
