Ryan Fontanilla is Assistant Professor of History at The Ohio State University specializing in Caribbean history, with research focusing on water politics, environmental crisis, and subaltern warfare in colonial Jamaica. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and previously served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
His research examines:

Fontanilla's current book project 'Waters of Liberation' investigates how 19th-century Afro-Jamaicans resisted water enclosure and debt bondage through environmental knowledge and insurrection. He teaches courses on Caribbean history, African diaspora politics, and racial capitalism.
