Ryan Fontanilla is Assistant Professor of History at The Ohio State University specializing in Caribbean history, with research focusing on water politics, environmental crisis, and subaltern warfare in colonial Jamaica. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and previously served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
His research examines:
- Afro-Jamaican freshwater access struggles post-emancipation
- Environmental racism in slave societies
- African traditions of environmental sustainability
- Black Radical Tradition and racial capitalism
Fontanilla's current book project 'Waters of Liberation' investigates how 19th-century Afro-Jamaicans resisted water enclosure and debt bondage through environmental knowledge and insurrection. His work connects historical patterns to contemporary climate adaptation challenges in Caribbean communities. He teaches courses on Caribbean history, African diaspora politics, and racial capitalism.
