David Clayton is a Senior Lecturer in Modern History at the University of York, affiliated with Vanbrugh College and the Department of History. He holds a BA and PhD from the University of Manchester (1987–94). His research focuses on decolonization, economic history, and British Empire studies, with additional interests in Asian and global business history. He directs the Centre for Historical Economics and Related Research at York (CHERRY) and is an associate member of the Centre for the Evolution of Global Business and Institutions in the Management Department.
David has held a Leverhulme Trust Fellowship and served as a visiting fellow at institutions in Hong Kong and Kyoto. He teaches modules such as 'Hong Kong: Decolonisation and Development' and 'Decolonisation and Development: the British Empire, 1945–1964'. His peer-review work spans journals like *Business History* and *The Economic History Review*. He has been an external examiner at the Universities of Glasgow and Manchester since 1992.
Active in academic service, David contributes to research training and oversees CHERRY, fostering collaborations across disciplines. His work bridges historical and economic analysis, with a focus on postcolonial development and institutional change.
