Dr Chi-kwan Mark is a Senior Lecturer in International History at the Department of History, Royal Holloway, University of London. He is a diplomatic and international historian focusing on Britain, China, America, and Hong Kong during the Cold War period, with a particular emphasis on decolonisation, Anglo-American relations, and global history.
- Education: University of Hong Kong (BA), University of Oxford (DPhil)
His research explores the intersections of British imperial history, Anglo-Chinese relations, and global Cold War dynamics. By combining traditional diplomatic history with the 'cultural turn' and 'everyday' approaches, he analyzes topics like propaganda rhetoric, diplomatic rituals, and symbolic retaliation. He positions Hong Kong as a critical lens to examine broader themes such as defence, decolonisation, nationality law, and economic globalization.
Mark has contributed to understanding the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through his work on refugee flows and historical globalization. His grants include an ESRC/RGC Joint Project on 'China, Hong Kong, and the Long 1970s in Global Perspective' (£83,568/HK$177,000) and a British Academy grant (£7,300) for research on Anglo-Chinese relations.
He is based in the Conflict, Violence and Terrorism Research Centre at Royal Holloway, where he engages in collaborative research projects. His publications include monographs published by Oxford University Press, Bloomsbury, and Manchester University Press.
