Matthias Morys

Professor Matthias Morys is a Professor of Economic History in the Department of Economics at the University of York, directing the Centre for Historical Economics and Related Research at York (CHERRY) and leading undergraduate admissions. His academic career spans from Lecturer (2008-2016) to Senior Lecturer (2016-) and current Professor, following postdoctoral work at Oxford.

His 2022 publications investigate Eastern-Western European economic divergence, central banks' role in managing global financial cycles during the first globalization era, and Reichsbank monetary transformations under the gold standard, revealing how historical financial systems shaped modern economic policies.

Secured British Academy funding for projects including "Common Factors in South-East Europe's business cycles, 1870 to present" (Principal Investigator) and "European emerging stock markets in historical perspective" (Co-investigator). Serves as editor for Financial History Review since 2010 and teaches undergraduate courses on British economic history, Industrial Revolution origins, and economic bubbles.

As CHERRY Director, he leads interdisciplinary research in economic history, fostering collaboration through seminars, workshops, and international partnerships focused on historical economic analysis and methodology.
