Univ.-Prof. Dr. Clemens Jobst is a Professor of Economic and Social History at the University of Vienna's Department of Economic and Social History, part of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies. He serves as Director of the Doctoral Programme for Historical and Cultural Studies and Vice-head of the Department. His research focuses on monetary policy, central banking, financial institutions, and quantitative methods, with a specialization in 19th and 20th-century economic history.
Key research projects include the analysis of central bank branch offices in the 19th century, the Austrian hyperinflation of 1921–1922, and the construction of historical time series for central bank balance sheets. He leads the South-East European Monetary History Network and contributes to initiatives like the BIS’s Irving Fisher Committee on Historical Monetary and Financial Statistics.
His publications span topics such as the financial aspects of post-WWI treaties, discount policies of the Austro-Hungarian Bank, and long-run consumer price indices. Jobst is actively involved in policy-related research, including advising the Bulgarian National Bank and contributing to the European Central Bank’s historical data frameworks.
He holds leadership roles in academic governance, including chairing the expert panel for humanities grants at the OeNB’s Anniversary Fund (2017–2019) and serving on the Advisory Committee of the Vienna University Press. His work bridges historical analysis with modern policy applications, emphasizing quantitative methods and institutional history.
