Dr. Kelvin Chan is a historian specializing in medicine and the British Empire, currently affiliated with the Department of History at the University of Bristol. His research focuses on colonial Hong Kong, particularly the history of madness, drugs, and traditional Chinese medicine.
Research Interests: His work examines the intersection of colonial governance and psychiatric practices, including the use of reformatory institutions, and explores the globalization of Chinese medicine from the 1950s to 1980s. He employs patient case files and transnational business records to analyze decolonization's impact on medical paradigms.
Publications: Recent articles in Medical History and China Information highlight his contributions to colonial psychiatry and therapeutic governance in Hong Kong. A chapter on 'Medicine and Healthcare' will be published in A New Documentary History of Hong Kong, c. 1945–1997.
