Dr David Bradley is an Honorary Researcher in the Department of Physics at Lancaster University and a core member of the Lancaster Ultra-Low Temperature Group, where he leverages over 30 years of expertise in building dilution refrigerators to investigate matter at microkelvin temperatures. He also serves as Director of the Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw Observatory, managing equipment and supervising undergraduate observational astronomy projects.
His research focuses on ultra-low temperature phenomena in liquid helium-3, including quantum turbulence dynamics, solid helium-3 layers on aerogel substrates, and pioneering applications of superfluid 3He as a particle detector for dark matter. Key achievements include the first thermal measurement of turbulence dissipation energy near absolute zero and achieving liquid 3He temperatures below 80 microkelvin using solid helium refrigeration.
Recent work, exemplified by his 2022 publication on quantum turbulence imaging via pair-breaking in superfluid 3He-B, demonstrates consistent innovation in experimental low-temperature physics with implications for fundamental quantum fluid behavior and dark matter detection.
Bradley actively contributes to physics education through courses in electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and astronomy, including the interdisciplinary 'Universe as an Art' program. His research was supported by the 'Superfluid 3He at Ultra-Low Temperatures' project (2013-2018).
He operates within the Lancaster Ultra-Low Temperature Group's custom-built infrastructure, including a 2mK dilution refrigerator capable of reaching 110 microkelvin for liquid 3He experiments, all designed and constructed in-house.
