Multi-instrumentalist, composer, music director, and educator Darren Young holds degrees in performance from the University of Calgary and the University of Toronto. He is currently a Lecturer at the Mount Royal University Conservatory in Calgary, where he contributes to music education and collaborates with institutions like the Classical Guitar Society of Calgary, which he presides over.
His research and creative practice span genres such as classical, post rock, prog, shoegaze, electronic, noise, and jazz. Darren actively advocates for new music through his role as a core member of the experimental Timepoint Ensemble, which premieres contemporary compositions, and as a performer and composer for bands like Diatessaron and Jung People.
He has received international recognition for his work, including an AMPIA Award for Best Original Score (2015) for the film "Empyrean." His compositions, such as the 50-minute song cycle "PARTNERS" and music for "Know The Rules, Win The Game," highlight his interdisciplinary approach to human interaction and connectivity.
As a performer, Darren has collaborated with ensembles like the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Cloudsway Dance Theatre, and he has attended the Aspen Music Festival and School. His teaching extends to private lessons, which are offered at $79 per hour.
