Darren Carr

Darren Carr serves as Vice Principal & Director of Studies at Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD), where he contributes to strategic direction and corporate policy-making. With over 30 years of experience in higher education across multiple institutions, he oversees curriculum management, student support, and academic resource provision to achieve outstanding conservatoire-level student attainment. Carr holds an MA Dance Studies (Distinction) and a Postgraduate Diploma Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

His educational background includes undergraduate dance training at Middlesex Polytechnic, followed by a performance career in America. Carr has extensive experience teaching across primary, secondary, further, and higher education settings. His research focuses on integrated dance environments, peer learning communities, and curriculum innovation, particularly through his 'JUMP IN(tegrated) Dance' project which explores inclusive practices with disabled and non-disabled dancers.

Carr's publications demonstrate his commitment to innovative dance education, with particular emphasis on virtual learning communities, inclusive pedagogy, and student-centered curriculum design. His work shows a consistent trajectory toward developing more accessible and integrated approaches to dance education that bridge academic study with professional practice.

Carr actively supports students through pastoral care as a tutor on MA Dance and Creative Enterprise and MA Dance Teaching and Facilitating programmes. He has secured multiple research grants including from the Office for Students, Leverhulme Trust, and CDD, demonstrating his ability to attract significant funding for innovative dance education projects. His leadership extends to chairing the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama's Senate and serving as an Executive Board Member for Dance HE.

Carr also maintains strong connections with the professional dance community through his work with organizations like Dance Northwest's Leap festival and his own company X-Closion (1990-2004), ensuring his academic work remains grounded in contemporary dance practice.
