Professor Daniel T. Orlovsky holds the position of Professor and George Bouhe Research Fellow in Russian Studies at the Clements Department of History, Southern Methodist University. He has served as Chair of the Clements Department of History (1986-1997), Co-Director of SMU-in-Oxford (1997-present), and currently chairs the Board of Directors at the National Council for Russian and East European Research. His research focuses on the Provisional Government post-February 1917 Revolution, Soviet white-collar workers (1918-1956), and the evolution of Russian bureaucracy across imperial, Soviet, and post-Soviet eras.
Orlovsky earned a B.A. (1968), M.A. (1971), and Ph.D. (1976) in History from Harvard University, complemented by language training at the Defense Language Institute (1970). His work emphasizes the 'hidden class' of Soviet-era white-collar employees, challenging orthodox narratives of Soviet society. He has conducted extensive archival research in Moscow and St. Petersburg, focusing on Communist Party, trade union, and state bureaucracy archives.
His major contributions include redefining the 1917 Revolution as a lower-middle stratum movement and applying corporatism theories to 1914-1921 Russian history. Ongoing projects include re-examining Russian officialdom from the 17th to 20th century and editing the Annals of Communism series. He coordinates international colloquia in St. Petersburg, leading to published volumes.
- Grants/Awards: Fulbright-Hays Fellowships (3), Lawrence Perrine Prize, Phi Beta Kappa award, Dallas Russian American Cultural Association Career Achievement Award.
- Professional Roles: Board member, Annals of Communism; project coordinator, Kennan Institute's 'Future of Soviet Studies' initiative.
Orlovsky's current research explores post-Soviet administrative transitions and collaborates with European University (St. Petersburg) and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Upcoming projects include updating Russian Officialdom for the post-Soviet era, to be discussed in Berlin and Moscow workshops.
