Alexander Herbert is an Assistant Professor at the College of Humanities & Arts, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He holds a BA in History and Russian Studies from Wheaton College, an MA in Russian History from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in Modern Russia and Environmental History from Brandeis University.

His research focuses on the intersection of science, technology, and environmental change in the late USSR, alongside the role of popular culture in education. He has authored two books: one on Soviet and Russian punk rock history, and another analyzing late Soviet anxieties through horror films.
Herbert has taught courses on the history of capitalism, European radical politics, film history, and underground culture. His fieldwork in Russia included collaborations at the State Historical Museum (Moscow), the Communist Party Archives, National Library of Russia, and the Environmental Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg. He was a Fulbright Scholar in St. Petersburg during the 2022 outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war.
