Dr Natalia Murray is a Lecturer in Modern Art and Curating at The Courtauld Institute of Art, where she teaches MA and BA courses on European art collections, exhibitions, and Russian avant-garde history. Born in St. Petersburg, she earned her BA and MA from the Academy of Fine Arts and her PhD from The Courtauld Institute. Her research focuses on Russian and European art from the 19th to 20th centuries, with a particular emphasis on avant-garde movements, art markets, and revolutionary cultural policies.
Her curatorial work includes major exhibitions such as Revolution. Russian Art. 1917-1932 at the Royal Academy of Arts (2017) and The World as Objectlessness at the Jewish Museum in Moscow (2022). She has authored books like Two Women Patrons of the Russian Avant-Garde (2021) and Art for the Workers (2018), analyzing proletarian art and Bolshevik cultural policies. Her articles explore topics ranging from Nikolay Punin’s critical role to the impact of festivals on revolutionary memory.
Natalia is a trustee of The Avant-Garde Art Research Project, advocating for avant-garde scholarship and combating art market fakes. She has organized conferences on Soviet art history and presented globally at institutions like the Venice Biennale and the Stedelijk Museum. Her work bridges academic research with public engagement, reflecting her commitment to preserving and interpreting avant-garde legacies.
