James T. Andrews serves as Professor of Modern Russian History at Iowa State University and Director of the Humanities Center, where his scholarship examines the political and cultural dimensions of Soviet scientific endeavors.
His research focuses on Soviet history through the lens of science and technology, with particular expertise in the cultural impact of the space program, Bolshevik science policy (1917-1934), and intersections between literature and revolution. Key themes include propaganda mechanisms, gender politics in cosmonaut narratives, and the role of public science in socialist ideology.
Andrews has authored and edited four major works including Red Cosmos: K. E. Tsiolkovskii, Grandfather of Soviet Rocketry and Into the Cosmos: Space Exploration and Soviet Culture, which analyze how space achievements fueled Soviet identity post-Stalinism and served as global socialist propaganda tools.
