Professor Daniel Stahl is a Professor in Medical Statistics and Statistical Learning at King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), leading the Department of Biostatistics & Health Informatics. He serves as Deputy Head of the Department and Deputy Lead of the NIHR Maudsley BRC’s “Trials, Genomics and Predictions” theme. Prior roles include Research Fellowships at the Max Planck Institute and University of St. Andrews, and Research Scientist positions in primatology and virology. He holds a PhD in Behavioural Biology and an MSc-equivalent in Biometry from Eberhardt-Karls-Universität Tübingen.
His research focuses on precision medicine, prediction modelling in psychiatry, and statistical learning. Key achievements include developing transdiagnostic risk calculators for psychosis and depression recurrence, and founding the Maudsley BRC Prediction Modelling Group. His work bridges clinical research and data science, emphasizing translational applications and clinician acceptance of predictive tools.
Teaching roles include Co-Programme Lead for the “Applied Statistical Modelling & Health Informatics” MSc programs and Module Lead for “Prediction Modelling.” He also leads the UKRI/MRC-funded Health Data Science online learning initiative. Over 70+ peer-reviewed articles span prediction models, clinical trials, and machine learning applications in healthcare.
His research group addresses gaps in psychiatric prediction modelling, focusing on subgroup identification via cluster analysis and model-based approaches. Current projects include EHR-driven risk prediction, Alzheimer’s deterioration models, and digital mental health intervention safety frameworks.
