Prof. Daniel Kaiser holds the position of Professor and Chair of Neuroinformatics at the Mathematical Institute of Justus Liebig University Giessen. He leads the Kaiser Lab, which specializes in cognitive and brain science research focused on visual processing mechanisms. The lab is currently funded by the European Research Council (ERC), German Research Foundation (DFG), and Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Art.
Kaiser's research examines how humans process natural visual environments, combining experimental psychology with neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, EEG) and artificial neural network models. His work explores:
- Individual differences in vision through personalized prior expectations
- Predictive feedback mechanisms in cortical processing
- Efficient neural coding of natural scene statistics
- Neural basis of aesthetic experiences
- Visual categorization processes involving frontal brain systems
His scientific awards include:
- ERC Starting Grant for 'Personalized priors: how individual differences in internal models explain idiosyncrasies in natural perception' (PEP)
The Kaiser Lab maintains active funding for multiple research lines including the DFG-funded SFB/TRR135 'Cardinal Mechanisms of Perception' and projects on aesthetic experiences and visual categorization. The lab operates under principles of fairness, inclusivity, and collaborative science as outlined in its Lab Manifesto.
