Daniel Gerster is Acting Professor of Modern History and Contemporary History at the University of Hamburg's Department of German History within the Faculty of Humanities. He has held this position since April 2025, where he teaches and conducts research on 19th-20th century European history. Previously, he served as a Research Associate at the Research Center for Contemporary History in Hamburg (since August 2020) and held academic positions at the University of Münster.
His education includes:
- Habilitation (University of Hamburg, 2023) on boarding school education and civil society
- PhD from the European University Institute, Florence (2011) on Cold War Catholicism
- First State Examination in History, Religious Studies & Education (Free University of Berlin, 2007)
Gerster's research focuses on interconnected themes of gender, education, and societal conflict. His primary areas include the history of masculinity, religious developments, educational socialization, and right-wing extremism. His current project HAMREA examines right-wing violence in Hamburg from 1945-2000s. His publications employ comparative frameworks analyzing Germany, Britain, and the United States.
Gerster serves as managing editor for the academic series Frieden und Krieg. Beiträge zur Historischen Friedensforschung (Peace and War: Contributions to Historical Peace Research). He maintains memberships in several professional associations including the Association of German Historians and the Working Group for Historical Peace and Conflict Research.
