Pierre Thielbörger is a Professor of German Public Law and International Law at Ruhr University Bochum, with a specialization in the International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict. He also serves as Executive Director of the Institute for the International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) in Bochum. His educational background includes degrees in law, journalism, and public policy from the universities of Hamburg, Harvard, and a PhD in international law from the European University Institute (Florence). He has additional academic experience from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and McGill University.
At the Hertie School, he teaches the core 'Law and Governance' course in the MPP programme and co-coaches the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition team. His research focuses on humanitarian law, international peace organization frameworks, and human rights advocacy. He co-edits two peer-reviewed journals: the Journal of International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict and Die Friedens-Warte.
Thielbörger holds leadership roles in academic networks, including chairing the Europe-wide 'Network on Humanitarian Action' (NOHA) and co-convening the human rights interest group at the European Society of International Law (ESIL). His work bridges academic research with practical legal governance challenges in conflict and post-conflict environments.
