Robin Gerster is an Adjunct Professor in Literary Studies at Monash University, specializing in war literature, travel writing, and Australian cultural relationships with Asia and nuclear histories. His research focuses on representations of Japan, nuclear cultures, and the intersection of photography with historical narratives. He has authored influential books such as Big-noting: The Heroic Theme in Australian War Writing (Age Book of the Year) and Travels in Atomic Sunshine: Australia and the Occupation of Japan (NSW Premier's Prize for Australian History). Gerster served as Chair of Australian Studies at the University of Tokyo and has led major research projects funded by the Australian Research Council, including studies on Australia-Japan photographic connections and Australian responses to nuclear warfare. His recent work explores atomic culture in Hiroshima and Here, examining the enduring impact of nuclear anxieties on Australian identity.
