Christina Twomey is a Professor of History at Monash University's School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies (Faculty of Arts). Her research focuses on the social and cultural history of war, including imprisonment, gendered violence, Australia-Asia relations, and humanitarianism. She holds dual fellowships from the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Academy of the Social Sciences. Twomey's leadership roles include Head of her School (2017-21), ARC College of Experts member (2019-21), and Editorial Advisory Board member for DFAT (2017-21). She is currently on secondment as the Australian Research Council's inaugural Chief Research Officer (2023-25).
Education: PhD in History from the University of Melbourne (1996). Key publications include The Battle Within: POWs in post-war Australia (2018, NSW Premier's Prize winner) and Australia's Forgotten Prisoners (2007). Her work explores post-war trauma, colonial legacies, and visual cultures of atrocity, with recent projects focusing on Australia's Cold War military garrisons in Asia.
Awards include the 2012 Distinguished Visiting Chair of Australian Studies (Copenhagen) and the Frederick Watson Fellowship (2010). She has led major research initiatives, such as the ARC-funded 'Australia's Asian Garrisons' (2016-21) and 'Detention: The Humanitarian and Imperial Origins' (2012-18). Her articles analyze decolonization, labor movements, and imperial histories in Southeast Asia and Australia.
