Professor Bruce Scates is a historian at the Research School of Social Sciences within the Australian National University. A Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (FASSA), his work spans military history, Indigenous history, environmental history, and digital humanities. He has authored/co-authored 12 influential books and 63 research outputs, with a focus on Anzac commemoration and soldier settlement.
- Research Leadership: Led Australian Research Council (ARC) projects on soldier settlement, World War II pilgrimage, and international Anzac Day history.
- Public Engagement: Co-produced the film Australian Journey, contributed to ABC’s The War that Changed Us, and developed MOOCs on war memory.
- Institutional Impact: Advised National Museum of Australia, National Archives, and Villers Bretonneux Interpretive Centre. His advocacy spurred digitization of repatriation records.
