Daniel Foster is an Associate Professor of Music at Eastern Michigan University, where he has taught violin and viola since 1987. Holding degrees in violin performance from the University of Michigan (MM) and University of Illinois (BM), he maintains an active dual career as both educator and performer specializing in historical repertoire from the seventeenth through twentieth centuries.
His scholarly profile encompasses:
- Baroque violin performance practice with period ensembles
- Early music ensemble direction and reconstruction
- Chamber music collaboration across historical periods
- String pedagogy integrating physical movement and expressive freedom
Professor Foster founded three significant early music groups: Xantippe (baroque flute/recorder trio), La Gente d'Orfeo (early 17th-century Italian music quartet), and Salutaris (EMU-BGSU collaborative project). He also co-founded the Red Hot Lava Chamber Music Festival in Honolulu and EMU's Alexander Trio, with recordings featuring Ars Musica Baroque Orchestra and Smithsonian Chamber Players.
In academic service, he teaches Applied Violin, Applied Viola, and MUSC 261 Basic Strings-Violin while contributing to EMU Strings. His mentorship approach emphasizes technical mastery through mind-body awareness, cultivating generations of string performers within Eastern Michigan University's music program.
