William Stapp serves as an Applied Instructor of Violin and Viola and Director of the String Ensemble in the Music Department at Hood College. He maintains an active dual career as a professional performer and violin maker, with extensive experience in orchestral, chamber, and educational settings.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Music from the University of Alabama (1991)
- Master of Music from the University of Michigan (1993) on full fellowship
- Associate of Science in Stringed Instrument Technology/Violin making from Indiana University (1996)
Mr. Stapp's professional focus integrates performance expertise with instrument craftsmanship. His teaching emphasizes technical mastery and musical expression through violin/viola instruction and string ensemble direction. He has performed at the Kennedy Center, internationally in South America and Europe, and with ensembles including the Shepherd University String Trio.
As an educator, he has coached the Academy of St. Cecilia Youth Orchestras, Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras, and Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra, while adjudicating numerous local festivals. He maintains current teaching roles at the Frederick String Initiative alongside his Hood College position.
He performs as half of 'Duo Liutaio' with harpist Astrid Walschot-Stapp, releasing the album "Out of the Silence" in 2018, and has held principal viola positions with the Maryland Symphony and Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra.
