Daniel Bishop

Daniel Bishop is a Reader in Psychology at Brunel University London's Department of Life Sciences within the College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. He serves as Programme Lead for the Psychology (Sport, Health and Exercise) BSc program and is a British Psychological Society Chartered Psychologist registered with the HCPC. His academic roles include Director of Research for The Bikeability Trust and former Departmental Lead for Staff Experience & Wellbeing (2019-2022).

His educational background comprises a PhD in "Manipulating Emotions for Performance," an MSc in Sport & Exercise Psychology, and a BSc (Hons) in Psychology. Prior to academia, he gained extensive industry experience across local authorities, NHS, investment banking, health & fitness, and Further Education sectors.

Dr. Bishop's research centers on Bikeology - applying scientific research to improve cycling competence, confidence, and safety. Through the LEAP Lab he founded in 2016, he investigates motor skill learning, expertise development, and multisensory perception in dynamic environments. His work spans optimizing human performance across education, work, cycling, driving, and sport using rigorous scientific principles.

His publication portfolio shows a strong focus on cycling safety interventions, particularly immersive training technologies for children's cycling education. His research integrates transportation psychology with sport science methodologies, demonstrating interdisciplinary approaches to road safety and physical activity promotion.

As founder of the LEAP Lab, Dr. Bishop leads research integrating his personal cycling experience with professional expertise in attentional, perceptual, and cognitive markers of expertise. His "Bikeology" program represents a unique fusion of academic rigor and real-world application, with particular focus on improving children's cycling safety through evidence-based interventions.
