James Newman is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Sheffield Hallam University, affiliated with the College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences. He is HCPC-registered as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist and holds Associate Fellow and Chartered Psychologist statuses with the British Psychological Society (BPS). His research focuses on safeguarding, bullying, and maltreatment in elite sports, particularly professional football.
With over 18 years of teaching experience across institutions like a U.S. 'Big Ten' university and UK universities, he completed an EdD exploring bullying dynamics in men's professional football. He advises sport organizations and consults on welfare interventions, while maintaining applied work with athletes in football, rugby, and other elite sports.
He serves as Chair of the Integrity Advisory Group for BASES, member of the BPS Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology Committee, and co-editor of the Sport and Exercise Psychology Review. His external roles include external examiner and panel member for multiple UK universities.
His media engagement includes radio, television, and print commentary on sport psychology topics.
