Dan Metcalfe

Dr Dan Metcalfe is the Director of CSIRO Environment, leading impact-driven environmental science across Australia. With expertise in landscape ecology, sustainable resource management, and climate-related natural hazard resilience, he has coordinated major initiatives like CSIRO’s response to the 2019/20 bushfires and advised governments on ecological challenges in the Murray-Darling Basin and Northern Rivers regions.

His research spans ecosystem function, climate change impacts, biodiversity conservation, and natural resource management, with fieldwork experience in tropical rainforests, savannahs, and drought-affected regions. He has contributed to national environmental assessments and led multidisciplinary teams in addressing ecological crises.

Dr Metcalfe holds leadership roles in advisory committees including the Australian Antarctic Partnership Program Management Committee, National Bushfire Intelligence Capability Advisory Board, and Integrated Marine Observing System Board. He received the Ecological Society of Australia's Ecological Impact Award (2022) and CSIRO's Chairman’s Medal (2018) for his work on bioregional assessments.
