Lee Baumgartner is an Executive Director at the Gulbali Research Institute and holds a Professor-level position. He specializes in freshwater fisheries sustainability, hydropower impacts, and ecohydrology. His research addresses the food-water-energy nexus, focusing on mitigating human impacts on riverine ecosystems. He holds a PhD in Applied Ecology from the University of Canberra and has served as Science Director at the Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre and Research Leader at NSW Department of Primary Industries.
Research interests include fish passage engineering, irrigation sustainability, and biodiversity conservation. He chairs the International Conference on River Connectivity and serves on boards such as the Murray Cod Fishery Management Group. His work contributes to UN SDGs related to clean water, sustainable cities, and life below water.
