Jason Thiem is a researcher at Charles Sturt University, based at the Narrandera Fisheries Centre since 2013. His work focuses on the abiotic drivers of fish movement, spawning and recruitment within the Murray-Darling Basin, with particular emphasis on riverine connectivity. His research provides scientific evidence to inform effective water resource use to meet the departmental objective of sustainable aquatic ecosystems.
His research interests center around river systems and environmental water management. Dr. Thiem's work examines how water flows affect fish populations, particularly focusing on connectivity requirements for fish movement and reproduction. His research combines field studies with advanced monitoring techniques to understand complex aquatic ecosystem dynamics.
Dr. Thiem's publication record shows consistent output over the past decade, with 2025 featuring multiple high-impact publications. His recent work spans river connectivity studies, fish community structure analysis, growth trajectory modeling, Mekong River migrations, and fishway effectiveness. These publications demonstrate his expertise in both Australian and international freshwater systems, with particular strengths in telemetry methods and ecological monitoring.
Dr. Thiem actively collaborates with various governmental and research organizations, as evidenced by his participation in the Murrumbidgee Environmental Water Advisory Group. His work directly informs water resource management policies and practices, particularly regarding environmental watering programs and fish passage infrastructure.
