Jarrod McPherson is an Aquatic Laboratory Manager (Fisheries and Water Infrastructure) at the Gulbali Institute’s Albury-Wodonga campus. With over 15 years of experience, he specializes in fish passage research across the Murray-Darling and Lower Mekong Basins. His work focuses on developing fish passage technologies and assessing their effectiveness in tropical rivers, particularly in Lao PDR.
Research interests include fish migration dynamics, hydropower infrastructure impacts, and sustainable aquatic systems. He manages the Aquatic Laboratory, overseeing projects like fish tagging (PIT tagging), dam mitigation strategies, and endangered species recovery programs such as the stocky galaxias reintroduction in NSW.
Key contributions include evaluating fishway designs for tropical rivers, protocol development for hydropower projects, and field-based studies on river connectivity. His work bridges applied science and conservation, addressing challenges in balancing infrastructure development with ecosystem preservation.
Notable projects involve collaboration with institutions like the Institute of Land, Water and Society, focusing on aquatic biodiversity in Southeast Asia and Australia. Current efforts emphasize training programs for regional stakeholders and advancing methodologies for assessing fish passage efficacy in large river systems.
