Damon Taylor is a Senior Lecturer in Design at the University of Brighton, affiliated with the School of Arch, Tech and Eng, and active within the Centre for Arts and Wellbeing and Radical Methodologies (RaM) Research Excellence Group. His work bridges design history, theory, and practice, emphasizing transdisciplinary approaches to embodiment, neurodiversity, and the politics of the designed environment. Taylor’s research explores how sensory experiences of design intersect with cultural and social dynamics, challenging assumptions about universal human responses to stimuli.
His research interests include the history of ergonomics, British pub material culture, and cybernetics’ implications. He has supervised PhDs on topics ranging from ceramics education to nanopoetics of use and socially responsible design discourse. Taylor teaches product design, sustainable design, and design systemics, advocating for inclusive pedagogical practices that foster critical engagement.
Notable publications include Moving Objects: A Cultural History of Emotive Design (2020) and chapters on design futures and unsustainability. His work critiques traditional design paradigms, advocating for ethical frameworks that account for neurodiverse experiences.
