Marcus Dymond

Dr Marcus Dymond is a Principal Lecturer and Subject Lead in Biomed and Biomolecular Sciences at the School of Applied Sciences, University of Brighton. He is also a member of the Applied Chemical Sciences Research Excellence Group and the Centre for Lifelong Health. His academic roles include serving as an external examiner for MRes Synthetic Biology at an unspecified institution and for Physical Chemistry at London Metropolitan University (2014–2018).

Dr Dymond holds a PhD in membrane biophysics from the University of Southampton (2002) and a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Bath. He was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in 2017.

His research focuses on lipidomics, biological membranes, and membrane biophysics, with applications in synthetic biology and biomedical engineering. Key areas include understanding lipid composition changes in cells, developing 3D-printed biosensors for vaccine production, and modeling phospholipid homeostasis. His work spans anticancer compounds, antioxidant mechanisms, and lipid-based biofuel strategies.

Recent publications explore ER membrane expansion mechanisms, crystalline bilayer formation in Fe(II) compounds, and the application of MXene materials in flexible electrochemical sensors. He also investigates cellular senescence protection through resveratrol analogs, highlighting interdisciplinary approaches in biophysics and materials science.

He holds the Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (2017).

He has supervised six PhD students, focusing on lipid-related global challenges such as drug delivery systems and biofuel production. Key grants include an MRC-funded project on omics technologies for disease treatment and prevention (2023–2026) and a project on lipid-protein interactions (2010–2016).

His work is conducted within the School of Applied Sciences, collaborating with the Centre for Lifelong Health and the Applied Chemical Sciences Research Excellence Group.
