Dr. Toon de Kroon is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University's Department of Membrane Biochemistry & Biophysics, Faculty of Science. His research focuses on membrane lipid homeostasis and phospholipid-protein interactions in baker's yeast (S. cerevisiae), leveraging biochemical, genetic, and lipidomic approaches. Key areas include acyl chain length regulation, CoA metabolism, and membrane lipid class interdependencies. He teaches in Chemistry and Biomedical Sciences bachelor programs and coordinates a master's course in MCLS.
Education: PhD (cum laude) from Utrecht University (1991), postdoc at Stanford University (funded by NWO). Awards include NWO Young Chemists Fellowship and CW-ECHO grants.
Research highlights include discovering regulatory mechanisms balancing bilayer/non-bilayer lipids and developing photoactivatable lipid probes. Over 80 peer-reviewed publications and contributions to EU-Networks. Holds roles in academic committees and is Treasurer of the Dutch Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2016-2023).
Lab work includes engineering yeast membrane lipids to improve bioproduction processes and investigating nanocapsules for cancer drug delivery. Active in training students through multiple project opportunities.
