Dr. Daley Birkett is a Senior Lecturer and Course Director at Macquarie Law School, overseeing Master of Laws programs and related coursework. He holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam, an LL.M. (cum laude) from Leiden University, and an LL.B. from Durham University, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). His research focuses on public international law, including international criminal tribunals, UN Security Council dynamics, and the law governing state use of force (jus ad bellum). He advises on international legal matters, including roles with the UN and committees like ANZSIL and DILA.
Teaching responsibilities include units on criminal justice and international law. Awards include the 2020 Journal of International Criminal Justice Prize. His recent publications analyze asset recovery mechanisms, legal frameworks for tribunals, and state self-defense in armed conflicts. He is actively involved in global legal networks, contributing to conferences and editorial initiatives.
