Carsten Stahn is a Professor of International Criminal Law and Global Justice at Leiden University and Programme Director of the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies in The Hague. He has held visiting positions at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (Geneva) and the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. Stahn's career spans academic research, legal practice at the International Criminal Court (2003-2007), and fellowships at institutions like the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (2000-2003).

His research focuses on international criminal law, transitional justice, jus post bellum, and the interplay between economic, social, and cultural rights (ESCR) and international criminal justice. Recent projects include a NWO-funded initiative on Post-Conflict Justice and Local Ownership. Key publications explore the ICC's impact, hybrid tribunal models, and the normative foundations of post-conflict justice.
Stahn's scholarship has been cited in ICC, ICJ, and European Court of Human Rights jurisprudence. He serves as General Editor of the Leiden Journal of International Law and Correspondent for the Netherlands International Law Review. His work bridges theoretical analysis with practical applications in conflict zones, emphasizing contextualization and local agency.
