Carsten Stahn is a Professor of International Criminal Law and Global Justice at Leiden University, concurrently serving as Professor of Public International Law and International Criminal Justice at Queen's University Belfast's School of Law. He leads the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies at Leiden. His expertise spans public international law, international criminal law, human rights, and transitional justice.
Education: PhD (summa cum laude) from Humboldt University Berlin, LL.M. degrees from NYU and Cologne/Paris I, and German legal qualifications. He previously worked at the International Criminal Court (2003–2007) and the Max Planck Institute (2000–2003).
Research focuses on global legal frameworks, international courts' roles, and critiques of international law's humanitarian and criminal justice dimensions. Key works include books on the ICC, contested justice, and critical introductions to international criminal law. His NWO-funded projects explored post-conflict justice and local ownership.
Awards include the Ciardi Prize (2009) for his PhD on international territorial administration. He edits the Leiden Journal of International Law and contributes to policy debates on global justice.
Advises PhD students in international law, criminal justice, and peace studies. Active in international legal networks, including as a Netherlands International Law Review correspondent.
