Cristina Demaria is a Full Professor of Semiotics at the Department of the Arts, University of Bologna. She also serves as the Rector's Delegate for Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Semiotics (1996) and a degree in Drama, Art, and Music Studies (1992), both from the University of Bologna. She has held visiting positions at institutions like the University of Nottingham and the University of Amsterdam.
Her research focuses on Cultural Semiotics, Gender Studies, and Memory/Trauma Studies, examining media representations of gender, post-conflict cultural dynamics, and commemoration spaces. She has led or collaborated in projects like MEMOSUR (Chile/Argentina memory studies) and SPEME (traumatic heritage in Europe and South America).
Demaria has authored numerous scholarly works and serves on editorial boards for journals like Studi culturali and Versus. Her awards include the 1999 RAI Research Prize and Honorary Professorship at the University of Nottingham. She has advised PhD programs and coordinated the Master in Semiotics since 2015.
Her professional roles extend to evaluation committees for European research grants and leadership in international consortia like the Study of Post-Conflict Societies. She actively contributes to institutional initiatives promoting gender equity and inclusive communication.
