Francesco Mazzucchelli is an Associate Professor at the Department of Philosophy, University of Bologna, and Director of the Second Cycle Degree in Semiotics. He leads the TraMe Center for the Semiotic Study of Memory and serves as Vice-President of the AISS Italian Association for Semiotic Studies. His research focuses on cultural semiotics, collective memory processes, and the semiotics of urban spaces and cultural heritage.
Education: PhD in Semiotics (University of Bologna, 2009), Laurea in Communication Sciences (2004), and Classical Maturità (1996).
Research interests include memory transmission via urban spaces, contested heritage preservation, digital cultural heritage sustainability, and semiotic analysis of traumatic memoryscapes. He coordinates EU-funded projects like DIGHT-NET and CULT-UP, addressing digital heritage and memory practices.
Teaching includes courses on semiotics of memory, urban spaces, and heritage studies across undergraduate and graduate programs. He has supervised over 20+ student theses and co-leads international research collaborations in Europe, South America, and Asia.
Institutional roles include membership in the Department of Philosophy’s Giunta, PhD boards, and editorial roles for journals like International Journal of Heritage, Memory and Conflict.
