Corey Ransom serves as a Professor in the Plants, Soils, and Climate Department at Utah State University's College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, where he functions as a Weed Specialist with extensive research and extension responsibilities across agricultural and natural ecosystems in Utah and the Western United States.
Dr. Ransom completed his academic training with a BS in Botany from Idaho State University (1991), an MS in Plant Science (Weed Science) from Utah State University (1993), and a PhD in Crop and Soil Science (Weed Science) from Michigan State University (1997). His doctoral research focused on the biology and control of hemp dogbane, establishing the foundation for his career in weed science.
His research program addresses critical challenges in weed management, with particular expertise in herbicide resistance mechanisms, invasive species control strategies, and integrated weed management systems. Dr. Ransom's work spans agricultural production systems including alfalfa, corn, and sugar beet, as well as natural ecosystems where invasive annual grasses and noxious weeds threaten biodiversity. His investigations into herbicide physiology and efficacy have provided valuable insights for both conventional and organic production systems.
Analysis of Dr. Ransom's extensive publication record reveals evolving research priorities that increasingly address climate-resilient weed management, water resource considerations, and the intersection of weed control with ecosystem health. His recent work demonstrates sophisticated approaches to managing herbicide-resistant weed populations while maintaining agricultural productivity.
Dr. Ransom's professional achievements include:
- Fellow of the Western Society of Weed Science (2023)
- Weed Supervisor Appreciation Award from Utah Weed Control Association (2014)
- COA Graduate Research Mentor of the Year from USU College of Agriculture (2011)
- Photo Selected for Cover of Weed Science (2011)
- 1st Place Photograph in Weed Science Society of America Photo Contest (2011)
- College of Agriculture Recognition (2007)
- Awarded Indefinite Tenure at Oregon State University (2003)
As an educator and mentor, Dr. Ransom has guided over 15 graduate students through degree completion, supervising research on diverse topics from kochia resistance to organic orchard floor management. His extension work connects directly with agricultural producers across Utah, particularly in Sevier County, where he provides critical expertise on agronomic crop production and weed management challenges.
Dr. Ransom maintains active collaborations with researchers across multiple USU departments and throughout the Western United States, contributing to interdisciplinary approaches for complex weed management challenges. His leadership in professional societies, particularly the Western Society of Weed Science, demonstrates his commitment to advancing the field through knowledge sharing and professional development.
