Dr. Connie So is a Teaching Professor in the Department of American Ethnic Studies at the University of Washington, where she has held academic roles since 1990. She also serves as the Supervisor of the department’s Community Practicum and Internship program. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies from UC Berkeley (2000), an MPA from Princeton University (1989), and a BA from UW (1987).
Her research and teaching focus on Asian American politics, cultural history, media representation, and community engagement. She has organized impactful initiatives like the Chinese Expulsion Remembrance Project and contributed to museum exhibits such as Out of Focus: Stereotypes of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in the Media. Dr. So has received numerous awards for teaching excellence, including the Northwest Asian Pacific American Favorite Educator (2013) and Leadership in Teaching Award (2007).
Professionally, she has served on boards for organizations like the OCA Asian Pacific Advocates of Greater Seattle (as President since 2020) and the Wing Luke Museum. Her community activism includes keynote addresses on Asian American history, leadership workshops, and public lectures on topics like Stereotypes in Media and Racial Equity. She has also secured grants for conferences on Indigenous cultures and Chinese American history.
Dr. So’s teaching spans courses on Asian American identity, immigration history, and media studies. She mentors students through internships and collaborates with community organizations to bridge academic and applied learning.
